LOVE - TRUSTING THE WORD OF GOD - 1:1-9

Verse 1

Received a faith same kind as ours – Jn.3:5; Ac.2:38; 2Th.2:10; Ja.1:21;
By the righteousness of OUR God and Savior, Jesus Christ. (Not personal Savior!)

Verse 2

Grace – plan of God to save men through His son, unmerited favor - forgiveness
Peace – comes from an agreement on what the Word of God teaches
Both multiplied to you through the True Knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord

Verse 3

His divine power – the Holy Spirit – has given to us Jn.16:13; Ro.8:9; Ac.19:1-6;
Everything for life and godliness via the True Knowledge (Word of God) of Him (Jesus) Who called us by His own glory (death, burial, resurrection) and His excellence – His way of living, “You follow Me.”

Verse 4

For by these (death and way of living) He gave us His precious and magnificent promises – Empowered, Delivered, Forgiven, Adopted, Provided, Renewed, Comforted, Enlightened, Entrusted, Redeemed via 10 plagues of Ex.
By the promises (standing on) you may become partakers (sharer, participate) of the divine nature – Holiness – Be Ye Holy as I am Holy! 1Pet.1:16;
Having escaped the corruption in the world by lust – 1Jn.2:15-17; 1Cor.10:13; Jn.17:14-19;

Verse 5-7

For this very reason – ‘to become a partaker of the divine nature, 1Pe1:14-16;
Applying all diligence IN YOUR FAITH (very personal – your responsible for your own self)
Supply EXCELLENCE (His way of living, follow Me)
KNOWLEDGE (worldly educated)
SELF CONTROL (for knowledge of good and evil)
PERSEVERANCE (Rev.2:2,7,11,26;)
GODLINESS (devotion to religious duties, Ro.12:1-3)
BROTHERLY FRIENDSHIP (Mt.25:41-46)
LOVE (Php.2:3-4; AGAPA – seeking the best for others) Now comes fruit of HS Gal.5:22-23;

Verse 8

If these are YOURS AND INCREASING – they render YOU neither useless nor unfruitful in the TRUE KNOWLEDGE (WORD OF GOD) of OUR Lord Jesus Christ

Verse 9

Lack these? YOUR BLIND BECAUSE YOUR SHORT SIGHTED (only see physical not the eternal)
Forgot your purification from sin (baptism - the marriage ceremony, Ro.6:4-7; Rev.19:7-9)

JOY - OBEYING THE WORD OF GOD - 1:10-15

Verse 10

Therefore BE DILIGENT to make certain His calling and choosing YOU, Study the Word.
HIS CALLING – 2Pe.1:3; Eph.1:18; 1Cor.1:26-29; Jn.10:4,14;
HIS CHOOSING – Mt.22:14; Mt.7:21-23; Eph.1:4; 2Tim.2:10; 1Pe.2:9; Rev.17:14;
For as long as YOU PRACTICE these things YOU will never stumble;

Verse 11

For in this way the ENTRANCE into the eternal kingdom will be richly supplied to YOU.
Entrance – Jn.14:6; Gal.3:27-28; Mt.28:19-20; Ac.2:38,47; 9:6,18; 22:16; Ro.6:4-6;

Verse 12

Always ready to remind YOU of these things – though YOU already know them have been established in the TRUTH which is present with YOU.

Verse 13

I consider it right – to stir YOU up by way of reminder

Verse 14

Knowing my departure is imminent – Jn.21:18,19

Verse 15

I will also be diligent… that YOU will be able to call these things to mind, writings.

PEACE - SHARING THE WORD OF GOD - 1:16-21

Verse 16

We did not follow cleverly devised (SOPHIDZO – to make wise) tales (MUTHOS – myths, stories) We were eyewitnesses of His majesty

Verse 17

Mt. of transfiguration Mt.17:1f; Mk.9:1f; Lk.9:28f;

We ourselves heard

Verse 19

We have the prophetic Word (made) more sure (confirmed, established, firmly grounded) which YOU do well to PAY ATTENTION - (to hold to, turn to, addicted to)
As to a lamp shining in a dark (drought) place – only means of light, Jn.6:68;
Until the day dawns - (dawns – to shine through) Judgement day – all over the world at once and the morning star arises in your hearts Rev.2:28; 22:18; Num.24:17; Isa.14:12; Morning star - PHOSPHOROS – light bringing (er) bearer

Verse 20

Know this, first of all –NO PROPHECY of Scripture is a matter of ONE’S OWN INTERPRETATION If you disagree with the whole – more than likely your wrong! Mt.18:15f; 2Pet.3:16-17;

Verse 21

For no prophecy was ever made by human will but men moved by the HS spoke from God.
Therefore we need the HS to understand the Word of God, 1Cor.2:10-16; Ac.2:38; Jn.16:13;

PATIENCE - TRUSTING THE BLESSINGS OF GOD - 2:1-9

Verse 1

False prophets (PSEUDO-PROPHATAS) arose in the OT
False teachers (PSEUDO-DIDASKOLOS) arose in the NT
Secretly introduce destructive heresies (opinions) not standing on the Truth
Denying (saying no to the Truth) No to baptism Mt.28:19; LT 1Cor.11:25 not whenever
Homosexuality – Mt.5:17-19 not to abolish but fulfill, complete, Jn.1:17; 1Cor.13:10;
Jesus the Master is the Word of God Jn.1:1;
Swift (TAXOS) upon themselves – Jn.15:2,6,7; Jn.8:31-32; 2Pe.3:8,9;

Verse 2

Sensuality – feelings and emotions, replaces the Truth, Jer.17:9,10; 2Cor.5:17; Heb.4:12;
Truth will be blasphemed – feels good do it; feels so right how can it be wrong – Pat Boone

Verse 3

Greed = coveting (to hold much more) Exploit (EMPORIUM) make merchandise of you
False words (PLASTOS) to form, molding, fabricated, Ps.12:2-3; Ro.16:18; 1Th.2:5; Jud.1:16;
Their judgement is not idle – 2Pe.3:8-9; Their destruction is not asleep

Verse 4

Angels cast into hell (TARTARUS) name of pit below Hades reserved for Titans (gods)
Did not happen in Genesis 6 – Satan & angels still in heaven in Jesus time.
Gen.6:1-2; sons of God Seth’s family, Gen.4:28; daughters of men Cain’s family
Satan had access into heaven – to get permission– Job 1:6,7; Zec.3:1-7; Rev.12:7;
Demons complain– not time to be tormented – cast into Tartarus? Mt.8:29;
Jesus defeated Satan by the resurrection – Ro.1:4; Heb.2:14-15;
Jesus ascended and threw Satan & his angels out of heaven -Rev.12:5-12;
The demons, Satan’s angels were then cast into Tartarus – 2Pet.2:4; Jude 1:16;

Ancient world – Mt.24:37-41; Lk.17:26-27; Confirming the flood. Noah – preacher of righteousness – preach – teach the lost, enough room in the ark

Verse 6

Sodom & Gomorrah – Lk.17:28-29;

Verse 7-8

Rescued = delivered – Ro.11:26; Col.1:13; Righteous Lot
Oppressed – wear down – to weigh heavily on the mind
Sensual conduct – homosexuality etc. see 2Pe.2:2;
Tormented? Physical or spiritual see Lk.16:23
Lawless (AVOMOS – without law) deeds Ro.1:18-32;
Unprincipled (ATHESMOS) – lawless 3:17;

Verse 9

The Lord knows HOW to rescue the godly from temptation – 1Cor.10:13;
Keep the ungodly under punishment – take great comfort in these facts – be patient.

KINDNESS - OBEYING THE BLESSINGS OF GOD - 2:10-16

Verse 10

Especially those who indulge the flesh – sensuality 2:2,7
Corrupt desires – 2:1
Despise (to think little of) denying the Master
Authority (2963 KUPIOTAS = Lordship Jude 8 not 1849 EXOUSIA – power, authority) 2:1
Daring - self-willed - revile = blasphemy
Angelic majesties (DOXA = glories) Glory of a knife – cut. Glory of man – obey God.
Glories such as baptism, LT, no musical instruments, organization, etc.

Verse 11

The angels don’t blasphemy these obvious abusers of Truth and the Lord’s body. God is the one who disciplines Heb.12:4-11;God is the one who prunes Jn.15:1ff
Mt.18:15ff but these don’t obey the Word of God, what can you do?

Verse 12

Born (GENNAW) not from above – but as animals with no purpose but be killed
Born again (ANAGENNAW) 1Pe.1:3,23; ANA denotes upward, born from above
Born again (GENNAW – born - ANWTHEN – from above)
ANWTHEN = from above in Jn.3:3,7,31; 19:11,23; Jam.1:17; 3:15,17;
Like unreasoning animals, creatures of instinct – follow their feelings and emotions reviling - blaspheming – where they have no knowledge (ignorant). To be destroyed as those creatures.

Verse 13

Suffering wrong (acting wickedly as wages of unrighteousness) Ro.1:28-32;
They count it a pleasure (HEDONA – Ti.3:3; Ja.4:1,3 ) Heb.12:28;
To revel (TRUPHA – self indulgence, boisterous, merry making) 1Cro.11:21,22
Stains and blemishes – obvious problems that need to be dealt with.
A stain makes the fabric worthless, the one destroys the work of the many.
As they carouse (SUNEUWXEOMAI – to entertain sumptuously, feast) with you.
Acting like nothing is wrong, as they undermine the good of the many.

Verse 14

Eyes full of adultery – how can I destroy this relationship I’ve grown weary of?
Sin is deep in the heart – sin that denies the Master and despises His Lordship
Enticing (DELEADZO – bait, to lure, entice 3x) Unstable souls – those not strong in Word
Trained (1128 GUMNAZO – to exercise naked, to train – 3x) in greed not the Word
Accursed – (2671 – KATAPA – a curse, 6X) Children – immature.

Verse 15

Forsaking the right way – The Truth – gone astray, following Balaam

Verse 16

Rebuked by a donkey is what it took to restrain his madness, no talking donkeys today.

GOODNESS - SHARING THE BLESSINGS OF GOD - 2:17-22

NO GOODNESS FOUND IN THESE!

Verse 17

Springs without water – appearance of righteousness – nothing within,
Mists driven by a storm – disaster always follows closely behind, hell is prepared for them

Verse 18

Entice by using fleshly desires, sensuality, the new Christians, those struggling, preying on the weak ad defenseless

Verse 19

Promising freedom, they themselves are enslaved to the physical.

Verse 20

Once were saved but have fallen back into darkness, worse than ever before.

Verse 21

Better not to have known

Verse 22

Dog to its vomit, a sow to the muck and mire

FAITHFULNESS - TRUSTING THE GUIDANCE OF GOD - 3:1-7

Verse 1

Purpose – to stir up your sincere mind, watch for dangers.

Verse 2

Remember the Word Jn.8:311-32; Protects you from bad people.

Verse 3

Last days – of the 1,000 yrs mockers will come

Verse 4

Where is the promise? All continues from the beginning.

Verse 5

They forget or don’t believe by God’s Word all came into being.
Earth was originally a ball of water, then dry land appeared, out of water. All life has water, by water

Verse 6

Then the world at that time, 2,000 yrs latter was totally flooded

Verse 7

By His Word, all is being reserved for fire, day of judgment and destruction of ungodly

GENTLENESS - OBEYING THE GUIDANCE OF GOD - 3:8-13

Verse 8

For the Lord – time is irrelevant, 1,000 yrs like a day and visa verse.

Verse 9

God is patient, WISHING FOR ALL TO COME TO REPENTANCE

Verse 10

Day of the Lord – judgment day; Heavens will pass away – universe is gone
Elements destroyed with intense heat - physical eliminated
Earth and its works - burned up

Verse 11

All these things to be destroyed in this way
What sort of people ought you to be: HOLY IN CONDUCT AND GODLINESS

Verse 12

LOOKING FOR AND HASTENING judgment day (by baptizing, book of life, has a last page)
Because the heavens will be burnt and the elements melted (hell is real)

Verse 13

According to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth. In which righteousness dwells.

SELF CONTROL - SHARING THE GUIDANCE OF GOD - 3:14-18

Verse 14

Since you look for these things – BE DILIGENT, to be found in peace, spotless, blameless

Verse 15

Regard the patience of our Lord as salvation

Verse 16

Paul’s letters are hard to understand, the untaught and unstable (established) distort as they do to all the scriptures, to their own destruction

Verse 17

Knowing this beforehand – BE ON GUARD, so you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled (113 – lawless)

Verse 18

But GROW IN THE GRACE AND KNOWLEDGE vs.1:2-3 of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity.
